Red Hill Special School is a co-educational state school facility providing excellence in education in a friendly and supportive environment.  It is a Department of Education and Training state special school – one of 47 such schools spread throughout Queensland. Located just five kilometres from the Brisbane GPO, we provide highly adapted and individualised programs for children and students with complex educational needs.

Separate educational provision for students with severe intellectual and physical impairments in the inner north side of Brisbane dates back to the commencement of outreach programs by teachers of the Chelmer Special School in 1982.  Back then these teachers would run classes in the wards for students with high support needs who were residents of the Halwyn Centre, an institution run by Queensland Health.

Stage 1 of Red Hill Special School was completed in 1985 and officially opened in 1986. The school, which is situated adjacent to the Halwyn Centre, was originally designed and built specifically to provide educational programs to students with severe multiple impairments who were residents of Halwyn. Stage 2 of the school commenced in 1993 with the acquisition of neighbouring properties and was officially opened in 1994. Stage 3, the extensions to stage 2 level 3, incorporating two new classrooms and a new staff room, began in late 2011 and was completed in 2013. In 2015 a new classroom space was created near the pool in stage 1 level 1 to accommodate a growing student population. With the acquisition of a property adjacent to the rear of the school in 2016, further expansion of the facility continued through 2017.

Between 2016-2017 our campus grew to accommodate our growing student numbers, with the senior students moving to a separate campus on Fulcher Rd in January 2018.

Our Senior campus is located on the grounds of the old Ithaca Tafe on Fulcher Rd.  Facilitating students from Junior Secondary though to School completion.

Our school is set to evolve , with plans to amalgamate both campuses to the Fulcher Road site are underway. Further information and updates can be found here.
